Nu stress later hoge cholesterol?
June 16, 2008 on 6:54 pm | In Stress, Burnout & Depressie |Een recente studie suggereert dat mensen die slecht reageren op stress, jaren later kunnen te maken hebben met te hoge cholesterol. Het effect zou minimaal zijn maar onderzoekers wijzen er op dat dit een reden te meer is om stress te vermijden.
Volgens dokter Andrew steptoe van de University College London, een dan de auteurs van het onderzoek is het onwaarschijnlijk dat de gevolgen van stress op ons cholesterol gehalte even zwaar wegen als onze levenswijze, maar deze studie helpt ons te begrijpen hoe stress gelinkt kan worden met hart- en vaatziekten. Chronische stress wordt geassocieerd met een hele waaier aan gezondheidsproblemen waaronder hartaanvallen, een ordinaire verkoudheid en zelfs een kortere levensverwachting. Dokter Steptoe’s onderzoek onderzocht ongeveer 200 mannen en vrouwen van middelbare leeftijd om te achterhalen of stress een invloed had op het cholesterol gehalte 3 jaar na de stresserende periode.
Na het meten van de cholesterolwaardes ondergingen de proefkonijnen enkele test waarbij ze verschillende niveaus van stress te verwerken kregen. 3 jaar later werden de cholesterol niveaus opnieuw gemeten, en zoals dokter Steptoe verwachtte waren alle resultaten hoger dan ervoor, een normaal verschijnsel bij het ouder worden. Maar de personen die het slechts reageerden op stress tijdens de proeven vertoonden tot 3 keer meer stijging van het cholesterol niveau dan de andere personen. Niemand kan stress volledig vermijden, maar wat belangrijk is, is de manier waarop men omgaat met stress. Steptoe veronderstelt dat stress meer energie produceert in de vorm van vetzuren en suikers op dat stress een negatieve invloed heeft op het vermogen van ons lichaam om cholesterol af te breken. Dokter Steptoe wijst er op dat de stijgingen eerder matig waren, maar als stress hart- en vaatziekten kan veroorzaken in cholesterol zeker iets wat ons lichaam kan missen. De beste manier om een gezond hart te hebben is geregeld lichaamsbeweging, een gezond dieet, gewicht en niet roken.
